Yeah, sure, it LOOKS like just another random Swiss construction project. But really, it is PURE EVIL. This is a geothermal drilling project. Big deal, right? But, because the Swiss can't get enough of environmentally progressive energy sources, they just HAD to try this project. And the fact is, there is VERY LITTLE GEOTHERMAL ACTIVITY IN THIS REGION. So they decided to drill VERY DEEPLY into the earth. Perhaps hoping they would reach molten rock at some point and could fill a few gas tanks with it??
So anyhow, this damn project (not surprisingly) hasn't met with success yet...unless you measure success in numbers of MAN-MADE EARTHQUAKES. Yes, you heard me. This drilling project, discontinued after their first earthquake in December, has caused a total of five temblors in the region. The epicenters and style of shaking have led them to conclusively conclude that this project in fact CAUSED EARTHQUAKES. Ranging in intensity from 2.9 to 3.4, they have all been quite noticeable, and good for a big adrenaline rush - particularly at my office, which is very close to the epicenter.
So here's a question: If you can CAUSE earthquakes (and we have learned that they knew this might be a risk of this project), would you freaking DRILL DEEP INTO THE EARTH WITH A MASSIVE HIGH-PRESSURE DRILLING THINGY IN A KNOWN EARTHQUAKE AREA?!
I mean honestly. And yeah, we had another one last night, and it made Scott all edgy - I didn't feel it because I was on a rush-hour tram.
Sheesh.

Yes, highly disconcerting for a CA girl to be living near man-made earthquakes. Surely, they aren't going to continue drilling?!

No, they have ceased with the stupid drilling. But the resulting "instability" and "small earthquakes" could go on still for several more months. GRRR. I'm gonna be hella pissed if they set off the Big One with their ill-advised, goody-two-shoes project. Hrmph.
Ahem, I check it all the time as well! So that sucks -- It doesn't sound like the Swiss way, either. Weird!

Well, you may think this is a lame-o blog, but I like it. I check it every day, and sometimes twice a day... just in case.
Gotta love those human-made geologic phenomena! Like the earth needs anymore help self-destructing. Hope the tremors end soon. If you'd wanted that, you could have stayed in Utah or California!
It's a swiss instinct to go for continuous construction.....check out the neverending growth of tram lines in Geneva....causing more traffic problems than they will ever, ever, solve....
Hey Strollerblader! They actually have Schoggi Teddis more often now, but one still can't eat them very often... We have changed to getting one and splitting it, and only every 2-3 months. But, oy, they're yummy.
Yes, the constant construction and ENDLESS road works projects in Switz are mind-boggling.
I had actually read this entry way back before there were any comments, but the only thing I could think to say at that time was something crass like "deep drilling resulting in earthquakes has always been MY experience, heh heh heh" so, its good thing I waited until now to comment, when I can sound so much classier.
Tee hee, Hevans! I kept thinking whilst I was writing this entry, and an earlier one about other construction projects, that the language can be quite, ahem, sexual. LOL.
